How cannabis oil is made - a few words on cold-pressed oil
Hemp oil is produced by cold-pressing hemp seeds. A special oil press is used for this. The process itself is not complicated and basically consists of 3 steps:
- Crushing of raw plant material (seeds)
- Vegetable pulp pressing
- Filtration of the pressed oil (water washing, sedimentation, filtration or centrifugation)
It is worth remembering that cold-pressed hemp oil is produced from the seeds of. For the pressing of hemp oil, certified seeds of Cannabis Sativa L. from varieties such as Finola or Futura 75 are used, among others.
The quality of the material used for pressing is fundamental to the final quality of hemp oil. Suffice it to say that damaged seeds are characterised by an increased content of heavy metals and pesticides.
Cold-pressing oil is one of the oldest methods of extracting oils. It is an environmentally friendly method that does not require refining. No chemical reagents or solvents are used in the process. Filtration is necessary to obtain a clear product.
Cold pressing takes place at low temperatures - the discharge temperature should not exceed 38-40 degrees C..
The disadvantage of this oil extraction method is the low efficiency of the process. It is technologically possible to extract from 6-15% of oil contained in the seeds.
An important advantage, on the other hand, is the high content of valuable plant compounds for health. Higher than that of refined oils, but lower than that of cbd oils.
Composition of nutrients in hemp oils
Hemp oils Hemp seed has the most favourable proportion of essential low-saturated fatty acids (EFAs) among health oils. We are talking about Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, an additional advantage from the point of view of balancing the diet.
Essential low-saturated fatty acids are not produced by the human body. It is necessary to supply them to the body with food.
The health-promoting composition of hemp oil looks like this:
- Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids in very favourable proportions
- Vitamins: A, D, E, K and vit B group
- Micronutrients: zinc, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium
- Phytochemicals: flavones and terpenes; among others, phytosterols and phospholipids, tocopherol, canabidiol or terpenol
- Cannabinoids: yes, in trace amounts, above that does not contain THC and Delta-8
The phytochemical content translates into a yellow-green colour and the characteristic hemp-nut flavour and aroma of hempseed oil.
Functional foods
Cold-pressed hemp oils fall into the category of functional foods.
Functional foods is a category of food for which a beneficial effect on one or more bodily functions has been demonstrated. These are, of course, functions other than strictly nutritional ones. The purpose of functional foods is to maintain or improve the functional areas of the human body addressed by the active ingredients.
Ideally, this action is confirmed by scientific studies at least at the level of the individual bioactive components.
Effects and properties of hemp oil
The positive impact of including hemp seed oil in the diet is due to the health-promoting properties of its composition of nutrients.
Among the most important activities and properties of hemp oil include:
- Positive effects on the circulatory system: strengthens the heart, improves circulation, minimises the risk of congestion and inhibits atherosclerosis;
- Supports the immune system: may reduce the risk of infections and seasonal colds
- Supports the body in destroying cancer cells: a well-nourished body is more efficient in destroying and removing cancer cells
- The antioxidant properties are due to the content of vit A and E and certain flavones/flavonoids
- Can have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects: this is due to the trace content of cannabinoids, flavones and terpenes - not the same potent effect as a dietary supplement such as CBD oil
- Cannabinoids support the normal function of the endocannabinoid system
- Neuroprotective and supportive properties for normal nervous system function
- Helps maintain efficient memory and concentration
- May support endocrine management, particularly in the area of reducing stress hormone levels in the body while supporting dopamine and serotonin production in the brain
- Minimises fatigue and supports the body's energy balance
- Improves quality of sleep
- Applied to the skin or hair, it has a nurturing and protective effect.
Hemp oil applications in diet and cosmetics
Natural, unrefined hemp oil great for areas such as:
1. Cuisine and diet
The primary function of hemp oil is its use in the kitchen for food preparation. As such, it is a source of health-promoting phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals making it a functional food.
Hemp oil should not be subjected to heat treatment! High temperatures will result in a loss of valuable properties.
This means that it is best eaten cold, accompanied by fresh vegetables. As a bread topping, it will successfully replace butter on a sandwich. It is perfect as an addition to salads or for preparing dressings.
Personally, I really like fresh bread dipped in hemp oil as an alternative to olive oil.

2. cosmetics, body and hair care
The use of hemp oil in cosmetics also has a number of benefits. It can be added to cosmetics or applied directly to the skin or hair. When applied directly to the body, the oil does not leave an oily film. It absorbs well, leaving the skin moisturised and pleasantly supple.
Hemp oil has been used by man for cosmetic purposes for hundreds of years. Among other things, it has been used to alleviate skin lesions including the treatment of psoriasis.
Cold-pressed hemp oil food applied to the skin is great for the skin of the neck, face, décolleté and entire body. It is also ideal for massage, as a bath additive or as a homemade face mask.
What are the benefits of using hemp oil in cosmetics? There are many:
- Promotes the restoration of the hydrolipid mantle of the epidermis;
- It replenishes deficiencies in the so-called intercellular cement, protecting the skin from moisture loss and supporting the protective functions of the epidermis;
- EFAs keep the skin in good condition and increase its resistance to the elements - wind, frost and sun;
- Soothes inflammation in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema.
- Minimises the annoyance of itchy skin in dermatoses such as AD and in the occurrence of skin allergies;
- Minimises the risk of irritation and discolouration;
- Supports the regenerative processes of the skin;
- Can prevent premature formation of wrinkles - inhibits the ageing process
- It enhances skin colour by affecting skin tone;
- It softens and smooths and is great for nourishing the skin;
- It supports the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne as it regulates the secretion of sebum;
- Restores and supports the maintenance of elasticity and proper hydration of the skin
- It acts as a natural sunscreen, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation;
- When applied to the scalp, it can stimulate hair growth;
- When applied to the hair, it adds shine, nourishes the hair and makes it easier to comb.

Difference between hemp oil and CBD hemp oil
Hemp oil and CBD hemp oil (known as cbd oil) are two completely different products. The difference appears already at the stage of the material used for production.
Food-grade hemp oil is made exclusively from the seeds.
Cbd oil, on the other hand, is produced from the extract of the flowers, leaves and possibly the stem, i.e. the above-ground parts of the plant.
This fact alone means that cbd oil contains significantly higher levels of health-promoting phytocannabinoids. Their composition is also different. CBD hemp oil contains the full spectrum (full spectrum) meanwhile, the cannabinoid composition of edible cannabis oil is limited to minimal levels of essential cannabinoids. Among other things, you will not find THC in hemp oil.
To sum up:
Hemp seed oil is a functional food and cbd oil is a dietary supplement. The former does not contain THC, while the full spectrum version of the latter contains a legal amount of THC.
Is hemp oil intoxicating? Is it safe?
Absolutely not. Hemp oil does not contain THC or Delta-8 because hemp seeds are essentially devoid of these cannabinoids. Such an oil is a simple cooking oil which, due to its trace content of health-promoting cannabinoids surrounded by vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 / Omega-6 acids, has a very versatile use in the daily diet.
Cold-pressed hemp oil food is a safe dietary ingredient. Nevertheless, it is recommended to consume up to 2 tablespoons per day.
Why only 2 tablespoons of hemp oil per day? Because sensitive people may experience discomfort, diarrhoea or temporary stomach pain.
Pregnant women are advised to avoid consumption of hemp seed oil Cannabis Sativa L. There is not enough research to confirm the safety of the internal effects of hemp oil during pregnancy. Ladies expecting a baby can, of course, use hemp oil externally in line with its cosmetic applications.
From which hemp is hemp oil produced?
Hemp oil is produced from the seeds of the hemp plant species Cannabis Sativa L. Certified seeds of cannabis varieties such as Finola or Futura 75 are used, and these are legal, certified seeds for both sowing and pressing.
The hallmark of legal cannabis strains is an increased cannabidiol CBD content while maintaining legal THC levels below 0.2%.
It is important to know that hemp oil is made from the seeds and not from the hemp plant itself.
Can hemp oil be combined with CBD oil?
Of course you can. While hemp oil is a food product, cbd oil is a food supplement. In principle, you can use hemp oil without any significant risk (except perhaps in rare cases of allergy). However, the use of cbd oil should be consulted with your doctor, especially if you are taking pharmacological drugs metabolised by liver enzymes.
What is the price of hemp oil?
Hemp oil is usually sold in 250 ml and 500 ml bottles. It is less common to find 50-100 ml or as much as 1 litre bottles of hemp oil on shop shelves.
It is the volume of oil in the bottle that determines its price. Good quality hemp oil can cost from about 28-35 zł for 250 ml to about 40-50 zł for 500 ml. Smaller volumes mean a higher cost per millilitre - 100 ml of oil can be found for around 17-20 zł. The best value for money is to buy 1 litre of oil - you will find it from about 80-100 zł.
Moving within these price ranges should be relatively safe. Buying temptingly cheap hemp oil is a risk of buying a low-quality product made from damaged seeds, with elevated levels of heavy metals and/or pesticides. It is worth choosing reputable producers and proven hemp shop.
How to store hemp oil?
It is interesting to note that the effects of different methods and storage times of cold-pressed oils including hemp oil have been the subject of scientific studies.
The conclusions that follow are unequivocal.
Storing the oils at around 6 degrees C increases their stability and slows down the ageing process. Unrefined hemp oils are best stored in dark, tightly sealed bottles.
Shelf life of hemp oil
Sealed and properly stored hemp oil is characterised by a fairly long shelf life. It ranges from 14 to 24 months from the date of production.
Once opened and under ideal storage conditions Hemp oil is best consumed within 6 months. According to cold-pressing experts, this period is between 2 and 4 months when stored at room temperature as standard.
Why is this important? Well, when considering buying a bottle of hemp oil it is worth thinking about what volume to choose. If hemp oil is not on your daily menu then buying a 1 litre bottle may mean that you won't have time to consume it in the aforementioned 2-6 month period.
It is therefore definitely preferable to choose oil in 250 or 500 ml bottles. Then you are most likely to use up the oil during its best quality period.
Alternative nomenclature: hemp oil, hemp oil, hemp seed oil or hemp seed oil?
